Shark Bento and Matkins Review

The nice people over at Matkins kindly sent me one of their innovative Matkin which is a handy combination of a personal portable placemat with a pocket for a napkin or utensils. The idea of sending along a placemat is cool enough all by itself, but what they have accomplished with these Matkins goes well beyond that. With a fun collection to select from, the placemat side resistance to stains is amazing.

We like to travel and are out and about most weekends, so whether it is at a park, at a beach, or where ever you want a clean surface, these are great to have along.

I made this shark themed bento to complement the Shark Attack Matkin.

In this bento lunch:
  • Shark shaped sandwich with a candy eye above sugar snap peas and carrot coins.
  • Above the shark are Cheese crackers, pearl tomatoes and watermelon which was cut to shark shape.
  • Far right is a mozzarella string cheese.
  • Packed into our Laptop Lunches
  • Including the handy Matkin. Linked to BentoLunch.net

Cat or Lion Bento

Happy Monday! I planned to make Nikolai a cat bento and when I examined my cutter and stamp set, initially I saw a cat in the center of the stamp piece, after I made the bento, I noticed it was a lion! I also used a cat cutter for the cheese and included a cat pick thinking it would be nice to have a cat themed lunch. Well, I still think it looks like a cat, how about you?

**If you like what I am doing here, I would also love for you to follow my Facebook page since I post more often there with some cute and fun foods which I occasionally find on the web.

In this bento lunch:
  • Cat (Lion ??) stamped sandwiches.
  • Organic baby carrots, cat shaped mozzarella cheese slices with food safe marker facial accents, fig bar cut in half and seedless red grapes.

Cat Mini Waffles Breakfast For Lunch Bento

We have so much leftovers from Easter dinner, but we are low on fruits so I am contemplating some grocery shopping. I am also out of nori (seaweed) and had to use fruit leather for the whiskers. Of all our traditional Japaneses bento boxes, I have come to love the Monbento box the most and if I had to choose only one traditional bento box, this would be it. It can be used either as a single or a double tiered box and I love the durability and feel of the plastic.

Cat Waffles Breakfast For Lunch

In this bento lunch:
  • Top tier: Mini waffles( stacked) with raisin pieces for facial features and fruit leather for whiskers, maple syrup in a small Monbento sauce container and a granola bar.
  • Bottom tier: String cheese slices, raisins and baby carrot slices in a pea pod container. Organic apple sauce in mini-dipper and a spoon wrapped in cloth napkin.
  • This lunch is packed in our Monbento box.

I added a little twist to his kebabs today with cut out cheese bears in the middle of the sticks.;)

Easter Basket Bento

This week Nikolai's school is having performance level evaluation tests, (known  by various acronyms depending on location) so it is a busy week. Nikolai is quite confident he will do well, and I am also.

I have always been fascinated with basket weave from tiny examples to hot-air balloon basket size. I also save those Easter treat boxes as some of them are cute and can be recycled to be used as treat boxes anytime. Here I used one to hold a bunny treat.

Note: If you like what I am doing, I would also love for you to follow my Facebook page since I post more often there with some cute and fun foods which I occasionally find on the web.

How To Cut Apple Bunny & Bunny Roll-Ups Sandwiches

As Nikolai told me that he loved the bear roll-ups I made a couple of weeks ago, I decided to make bunny roll-ups this week. When I was attempting the first photo for this post a gust of wind blew away one of the bunny's eyes and nose even while glued with honey. My hubby thought that was a little funny. Of course I had to reassemble the missing nori parts, not funny to me at that time, but later we had a good laugh.

My first attempt of apple bunnies or apple rabbits. Here is the method:

1. Start with a wedge from the apple cut into six or eight pieces, and cut out the core. Make a cut just below the skin about 1/3 distance (top to bottom) and then cut the skin to make a V- shape.
2. Carefully lift out the center V section so that the part that remains forms the bunny ears.
3. To prevent browning I soaked them in a bowl of lemon water for a few minutes. (Citric acid is the key ingredient which helps prevent oxidation/browning). Sometimes I do soak our apples in orange or pineapple juice.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail Easter Bento

Here comes Peter Cottontail Hopping down the bunny trail, hippity, hoppity, Easter's on it's way!
I used the cookie cutter as a divider, the same one I used to cut the sandwich, as an easy way to keep the broccoli in place and then it made the perfect place for a Gouda cheese version of the "cottontail".

Bunnies Everywhere Easter Bento

Easter Sunday lands on April 20th this year and I'll be making some Easter themed bentos for school whenever I get the inspiration. I believe I have mentioned how much I love my easy to use and cute cutter and stamp sets. Here I used the bunny set to make a collection of easy to eat mini sandwiches for Nikolai's lunch.
I also like sending applesauce in his Laptop Lunches container since it comes with individual lids and they are leak-proof.

Bear Roll-Ups Sandwiches Bento

My creative friend Ming from Bentomonsters made some super cute Hello Kitty sandwich rolls which inspired me to try this out. Visit her site here for her cute bento as well as step by step tutorial.

I did read it, but by the time I got into making my example...I forgot the cling wrap part!
I guess I was just lucky this time as it turned out o.k. even without it. :) These roll- ups are quite easy to make and I will definitely make them in near future and try to remember the cling wrap part!

Note: If you like what I am doing, I would also love for you to follow my Facebook page since I post more often there with some cute and fun foods which I occasionally find on the web.

Spring Flowers Bento

There are lots of great reasons to keep a collection of silicone cups handy, as you may have noticed in other posts I use them often. Yet another good use for them is to use them to hold mini sandwiches as I've done in this bento. I think using them to sort of frame the sandwiches quickly made them a little more cheerful.

  • Circle sandwiches in flower shaped silicone cups with icing eyes and colby mouth. Cheez-It crackers and a large strawberry.
  • Seedless red grapes with a flower pick.
